Featuring early career performances of two of my favorite South Korean actors – Ji-sub So and Sang Woo Kwon – the charming drama We Are Dating Now (2002) is a delightful change of pace from the more melodramatic series that I generally gravitate toward.

From the first episode, I was hooked on its engaging characters and somewhat whimsical storyline as well as its emphasis on ordinary, relatable people and their families.

Its leading actress, Rim Chae, was already familiar to me as the ‘good girl’ lead in All About Eve, and in We Are Dating Now she is even more endearing -- like a Korean Sandra Dee. Unlike other dramas I’ve watched, We Are Dating Now has a very simple plotline.

Ho-Jae, Ho-Jung's brother, is a player, who has good physical features.

Things start to get complicated for Ho-Jae when he falls for Ho-Jung's friend Soo-Ji, who does not have a physical appeal but has a good personality and intelligence.

This prompted Ho-jae to remove his shoes and lend it to Soo-ji, suffering the cold winter road until they reach a shoe retail shop where he bought a new pair of black shoes for Soo-ji.

At night, when they slept in a hotel, Soo-ji promised that she would send him 1000 letters, daily, during his entire term in the army, by presenting a red card with the number "1000" drawn on a red heart.

Then the second half of the drama focuses more on the quarrels/relationship (friendship to romantic) of Ho Jung/ Kyo In and also the struggles Ho Jae ( female lea’s brother) and Su Ji (female lead’s BFF) have trying to convince their parents they want to get married.

This was actually my favorite part of the plot because it was so much fun watching them go from Noona/Doonsang friendship to awkward/odd romantic pairing.Su-ji (Eui-jeong Lee, a tiny girl skilled at both comedy and drama), is the studious, bespectacled only daughter of wealthy parents (mother Eun-sook Sunwoo, an obstetrician, and lecturer father Hyun-sik Im, a doting dad who calls his daughter Princess). The two girls adore each other and their loving bond will resonate with any woman who has a childhood best friend (as I do in my friend Jill who created this kdramalove website). This act affectionately touched Ho-jae and he gave her a hug. After serving the army, Kyo-in was employed into a company together with his friend Gun-woo, whom he first met when they helped a fellow employee-to-be during an interview who had taken ill, and they became friends from there. However, it was SO fun seeing these wonderful actors when they were young. They love each other but they keep on fighting and they break up.
